The 'Decision Making' exercise was very interesting. Firstly, the idea that we, as a class, were able to determine how we wanted to handle the past exam and the following exam was pretty cool. In addition, I found it pretty amazing that the class was able to come up with and agree on some really great ideas to make this exam experience a little better. Although in the end we were able to come up with some ideas, there was a lot of chaos to get to the final result.
I don't like chaos and I really had the urge to just get up and leave because I could not deal with the noise and the feeling that nothing was going to get accomplished and we would waste this opportunity. Although I handled the conflict with the use of avoidance, after the 'leader', Teddy got up to the front of the room and calmed the class down and organized us, I did add to the discussion with a few suggestions. At the end of the class, when we had to vote on the ideas, the entire class, including myself, collaborated and were able to agree on a large number of ideas and requests.
Initally I chose the avoidace method because I am shy and I dont like speaking out in class in front of so many people. In addition, I was so frustrated that I felt like no matter what I said nothing was going to get accomplished and it was going to be a waste of effort.
I think the class was able to accomplish so much in large part due to Teddy. Without him it would have taken us much longer to accomplish and decided on much less. With that said, the way the class handled the situation was really good and I don't think there could have been a better way that would have given us a more desirable outcome. The way the class intereacted and the fact that nobody had a problem with Teddy becoming the class spokesperson or leader was the reason we were able to get such a desirable outcome.
